We left our house at 2pm 6/10 - Pharr drove us to the airport after a morning of final packing, cleaning, and weighing bags (thanks to Garth and Julie’s bag scale). Our bags were even light enough that we were able to fit a few snacks and the pb n js that I made for lunch the following day. Caveat - my family knows I’m a bit of a planner with food (understatement) while we’re traveling. I hate the thought of being on a plane or in a foreign place without a good option for food! Even though I receive a few eye rolls along the way, my family is usually thankful when I pull out the apple slices when hunger strikes!
6/11/24: Our 7 hr flight on Icelandic Air arrived at 0700 local time. The bags made it too - but Bob’s comments to the Customs officer about our extended stay in Europe (ie no return ticket purchased) prompted her to pull us aside for more questioning. We were momentarily concerned, but fortunately she was very kind and was satisfied after hearing a little more detail of our travel plans.
Off to our rental car, and after a brief stop for smoothies and a delicious brunch we headed to the Kerio Crater. En route we made a few quick stops - breakfast food, bread, apples, carrots, and pb n j. Bob lamented the only size box of cheerios was enormous (little did we know that our kids would fall in love with cheerios on this trip!) The kids could not be roused as we did not sleep on the flight.

The Crater was very cool, though, and the weather was gorgeous - we would’ve appreciated it more if we knew how terrible it would be in the next few days! |

We arrived at our lovely Airbnb in the countryside, unpacked, and went out for dinner at a traditional Viking restaurant. Next stop - BED! |
