10/12: We left Zugspitze (Germany), and stopped in Innsbruck (Austria) to do a short walk through town.
We left Innsbruck anticipating a 3ish hour drive to San Vito di Cadore, our town just south of Cortina (Italy). Originally we thought we’d have time for a hike on our way, but our trip up Zugspitze took the time we needed for the hike.
The first 15 miles of our 100 mile drive took us almost 2 hours as we ended up in completely stopped traffic. It was similar to an awful I70 experience. Now we were going to be so late to our town that the only grocery store would be closed (closes at 7pm). These grocery store early closures and Sunday closures are occupying way too much of my brain space!
We made a quick bathroom stop at a roadside restaurant and bought a few back up sandwiches in case the grocery store I thought would be open happened to be closed (the internet is not always correct!).
We stopped at a town that was still 1 hour away from our town, and I did my best to only get essentials for dinner and breakfast as our car was completely jammed already. We finished the beautiful drive that we couldn’t see in the dark (frustrating!) with groceries on all of our laps. Fortunately the directions to our place were good and we found it easily in the dark. This was the first time we arrived to a new Airbnb in the dark, and we all agreed it is not desirable.
Our place in the Dolomites was clean (most important quality) and we got busy settling in. We enjoyed some pizza and salad before bed, and got excited to see our surroundings in the morning!
