HOLY WIND!!!

6/13: It’s impossible to describe the wind of today. I think I saw the figure of 50-60 mph - it was literally blowing us over. Our plan was to get up early and head out to Westman Island off the south coast of Iceland.

However, we were awake much of the night listening to the insane wind whistle through our outside door to our bedroom…so we decided to sleep in and go on the later ferry to the island. We almost didn’t go at all, because the weather was so so terrible - the crazy wind, chilly temps, and raining. But we’re here! So we did it:-)

On the ferry to Westman island - the last time Simone was smiling on the ferry (so seasick!)

The waves were incredible - while Simone and Bob were turning a little green and heading for the middle of the boat to minimize the rocking, Quinn and I headed to the front to maximize the thrill. My dad would’ve loved it!

I had an entertaining conversation with the captain on our way off the boat (English not his first language)

Me: “Wow! How big were those waves?!”

Him: (looking at me like I was ridiculous for thinking those were big waves) “2.5 - 3 meters”

Me: “how big do the waves get?”

Him: “6-7 meters”

Me: “WOW! And you still run the ferry with those waves?”

Him: (looking incredulous) “oh NO! No no…”

Me: “Oh - well what is the limit where you don’t run the ferry?”

Him: “3.5 meters”

So if the waves were 0.5 meter bigger (less than 2 feet) the ferry wouldn’t have operated!

There was a huge volcano eruption in 1973 that covered the island in lava and ash. We’re standing next to a pillar representing the depth of ask that covered the island. We went to a super cool lava museum that detailed the events of that day.

We finished off the day with our hosts taking Quinn and Bob to their barn to feed their 20 goats. Their property is beautiful and quite large (1200 acres!) we enjoyed the lambs too:-)
