10/10: We woke up to a socked in rainy day, which was not terrible given that we had no plans, and we’d been on the move Monday - Wednesday. I jumped in bed with each child and had a snuggle, then enjoyed a workout and blog catch up. I got the kids going with breakfast and school, and enjoyed the downtime in our place with a beautiful view despite the crummy weather.
We also needed time to try and fix Quinn’s brace. The Velcro on two of the straps was not sticking anymore. Fortunately, at his last appointment before we left, I asked for more straps and supplies to change the straps in case we needed to. It was a last minute ask, and seemed extremely unlikely that we’d need them, but I was in super ‘what if this, and what if that while we’re away’ mode. This was so incredibly fortunate that I thought of it, as we have NEVER had the Velcro fail on his braces after 12 braces in 9 years. Now that we’re out of the US, two out of the three straps are failing. Wow.
We needed some specific tools to remove the old straps, and Bob and I were feeling a bit anxious about the process. What if it didn’t work and left the brace unwearable? Bob had the idea to try and fix the existing straps first by shaving off the Velcro and attaching new sticky Velcro that we had brought along. This took him about 2 hours, and with the addition of duck tape, it seemed like it worked!
We headed out for a German dinner, and struck out at 4 places because we didn’t have a reservation - we were kicking ourselves because we had been home all day and didn’t think to make one. Bob and Quinn went to check out another place while Simone and I walked back to the original spot to see if they somehow had a table for us. The boys were seated, and so Simone and I went to join them.
As she and I were entering the restaurant having a lovely conversation, a small dog on a leash barked and bit Simone’s leg. It was such a shock, and I grabbed her in a big hug. The elderly couple with the dog started asking me in German if she was ok (I think that’s what they were saying??) while I was trying to see if she was bleeding. My mind immediately fast tracked to what if it broke the skin, and how to ask them if the dog has had its shots, and where is the nearest urgent care/ hospital.
Thankfully the skin was not broken, and after some tears and hugs we could go on with our evening. When I said earlier that I wonder which parts of the trip the kids will remember, I know that she and I will always remember this!
10/11: Another cloudy/ rainy day. Bob and I started the day with our favorite walk tour of the city while Quinn finished up schoolwork and Simone played a bit of Rocket League (Quinn has her practicing:-) We had thought that a hike and a tram ride to the top of Zugspitze was our plan for today, but the drizzle was creating a challenge.

We also realized our Velcro brace fix that we were celebrating yesterday was not working (NO!). We decided to visit the bike shop downstairs in our building to see if we could borrow some tools to help us replace the straps. I was pretty apprehensive and nervous.
Fortunately, the guys in the bike shop were super friendly and helpful (and spoke English!). They led us behind the desk and let us use their tools. We got the first one replaced without too much difficulty, but the second one posed a bit more of a challenge. We struggled for awhile, until a different guy came in and saw our dilemma, and immediately found the perfect apparatus for us to use. After that we finished the second strap, and were so thankful!
